From Seeds to Cup

The beverage that helps you take a few minutes to calm down, relax, and think positive has taken a long journey to arrive in your cup.

Everyone knows that ''coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain flowering plants in the Coffea genus'', but now we are going more in-depth with the steps of making one of the most famous beverages.

1. Processing the beans

Once the coffee has been picked, processing must begin as quickly as possible to prevent fruit spoilage.

In case, the cherries are processed by disengaging the coffee seeds from their coverings and from the pulp and by drying the seeds. For doing this process could be used three different techniques known as: the dry, or “natural,” process, the wet (and washed) process, and a hybrid process called the “pulped natural,” method. The final result of this process is the well-known ''green coffee'' ready for the next step roasting.

2. Roasting

The next step called roasting is a process that transforms green coffee into aromatic brown beans. The next step called roasting is a process that transforms green coffee into aromatic brown beans. In fact, the aromatic and gustatory qualities of the coffee are developed by the high temperatures during roasting. Most roasting machines maintain a temperature of about 180 to 250 °C (356 to 482 °F) and the roasting process continues anywhere from 7 to 20 minutes. The process should be maintained carefully because roasting too long can destroy volatile flavor and aroma compounds. An interesting fact is that the roasting process is generally performed in the importing countries just because the freshly roasted beans have to reach the consumer as quickly as possible.

3. Grinding

The aim of the proper grind is to get the most flavor in a cup of coffee. Of course, some coffees are left as whole beans to be ground at the time of purchase or by the consumer at home. However, according to the big producers, most of the coffee is milled, by the manufacturer immediately after roasting.

4. Brewing and serving

The last step before enjoying the coffee is as important as the previous ones. However, here everything varies and it depends on everyone's preferences and tastes. In fact, the right way to make it is how you like it the most.
Grounding and brewing are integral parts of making the beverage. The process is very simple and familiar to a lot of people preparing their coffee every day. The delicious beverage requires the beans to be firstly finely ground and then mixed with hot water long enough to allow the flavor to emerge.
There are several methods for brewing the coffee- boiling; steeping and pressurizing. A good example of brewing coffee by boiling is the Turkish coffee. This process makes the coffee strong with a layer of foam on the surface and sediment settling at the bottom of the cup.
Once the coffee is brewed can be served in a variety of ways, for instance, coffee with a dairy product or black coffee with no such addition and also could be served cold.
